GEC, The General Electric Company plc, as title sponsor for the festival of the
sea, sponsored a competition for schools in England and Scotland in conjunction
with The News.
On May 3 1998, the GEC festival flagship Sedov, the
biggest sailing ship in the world, set sail from Chatham for Falmouth via
Hamburg.
Competition entrants had to estimate where they thought she would
be at noon on specific days.
The vessel was equipped with an Inmarsat-C
Terminal with Integrated GPS receiver. The RME Fleet Management Software was
then used to program the terminal to automatically send its position to be
displayed on the digital maps, on the competition web-site.
